Weddings in Scotland are back, baby! Here’s what you need to know about the restrictions

16th April 2021

Get that champers on ice because it’s official: weddings in Scotland are coming back! Nicola Sturgeon made an announcement this week about the new restrictions and what type of weddings will be allowed at each stage as the rules ease off and life gets back to normal.

Confused by it all? Don’t worry brides, we’ve got you!

Here’s a guide to Scotland’s new wedding restrictions to help you plan your dream day over the next few months.

Monday, 26th April: Level 3 Weddings in Scotland

From Monday, 26th April, it is expected that all of Scotland will move to Level 3.

So what does this mean for weddings?

Well, bigger celebrations will be allowed once again, with a maximum of 50 guests for your ceremony and reception. Not quite a micro wedding and not quite a maxi wedding, we are officially naming this the midi wedding!

Previously we were told that these weddings would have to be alcohol-free, but the good news is that booze will now be allowed, so start prepping those cocktails and booking those prosecco vans.

Guests will be able to travel from across Scotland which means you’ll be able to celebrate with loved ones you haven’t seen in a while.

At this point, weddings should either take place outdoors or in a regulated venue (ie, not within a private dwelling) as in-home socialising is not allowed.

We are still waiting on more detailed guidance being published, but we expect all the usual restrictions will apply in terms of wearing face masks and social distancing. Up until now, the couple getting married have not been required to wear a face mask during the ceremony, and it is unlikely this will change.

Speaking of getting those gorge faces out: you’re allowed to get your make-up AND hair done which means the AMM team can come along to make sure you and your bridesmaids look incredible!

AMM have strict measures in place to ensure your safety when providing hair and make-up services during Covid-19. We have a certificate from Guild Training International which verifies that we have satisfied the requirements for the Covid-19 Infection Prevention and Control qualification. Our team are all trained in PPE and will be wearing masks, and we’ll have a sanitising station for all clients.

Monday, 17th May: Level 2 Weddings in Scotland

If all goes well, the Scottish Government expects we should be able to move into Level 2 on 17th May. YAS!

Level 2 weddings look as though they will be similar to Level 3 weddings, with a maximum number of 50 guests.

At this point, it has been indicated that music venues will be allowed to reopen, so this could be a good sign with regards to having live music at your wedding – but we will need to wait on further guidelines being published on the Scottish Government’s website.

Early June: Level 1 Weddings in Scotland

One major lesson we’ve learned this year is that nothing is ever set in stone, but to provide us with a bit of a road map, the Government has suggested that if things go to plan, Scotland could move to Level 1 in early June.

Level 1 weddings in Scotland will be a step much closer to what they were pre-Covid, as the guest capacity will increase to 100 at this stage.

Late June: Level 0 Weddings in Scotland

Here is where it gets super exciting! If wee weddings have never been your thing and you want a bells and whistles wedding with lots of guests, then you’ll be allowed up to 200 people celebrating your big day once we reach Level 0.

No concrete dates have been provided yet but on the Scottish Government site it says: “From the end of June, we hope that we will be able to move to Level 0.”

So what’s next for Scottish weddings?

Obviously, these are just rough guidelines at the moment, based on the initial advice the Scottish Government has set out. We will update it as and when we get more detailed info.

The Scottish Government website has a section dedicated to weddings, but at the time of writing it has not been updated since January. Save it to your browser bookmarks for when new updates are announced.

In the meantime, there’s loads you can start planning for and we are ready and waiting to get you looking gorgeous for your big day!
